NATCOM says revitalised national carriers to employ 10,000 Nigerians as operations commence

Ntel is the new brand name which NATCOM will go by after it purchased defunct national carrier, NITEL. According to media reports, the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) and its mobile subsidiary (MTEL) has told the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Communications that it plans to employ 10,000 Nigerians.

New owners of the once state-owned telecoms giant, NATCOM, a consortium of seven local and foreign companies, made this known at an investigative public hearing by the committee over the weekend in Abuja, Leadership reports.

Mr. Olatunde Ayeni, NATCOM chairman, told the House committee that having met all requirements and due diligence in the process leading to the acquisitions of NITEL and MTEL, the company has put a programme in place to revive the two nearly defunct telecoms companies.

According to Ayeni, the consortium’s efforts at overhauling the entire cable system was ongoing while 10,000 Nigerians would be employed to set the companies in a prime spot to compete with other players in the market.
